Listen/Écoute is the official publication of the Canadian Hard of Hearing Association (CHHA), a non-profit organization dedicated to assisting persons with hearing loss and their families. This journal is a cornerstone of communications for more than 3,000 members of the CHHA, and acts as a source of information and inspiration. Listen/Écoute strives to provide members and non-members alike with the timely and informative information related to individuals who are hard of hearing. ​Learn more about CHHA here.

Winnipeg born Daria Valkenburg is the author of two children’s books, a farm accounting book, and numerous articles on agribusiness topics and genealogical research.  P.E.I. newspapers have also published her articles related to CHHA P.E.I.  Daria and husband Pieter enjoy a quiet country life in rural Prince Edward Island, and love to travel whenever they get ‘island fever’.

Carole is a bilingual lawyer with a profound bilateral hearing loss as a result of an accident when she was four years old. She currently wears a hearing aid on the right and a cochlear implant on the left. Carole served as CHHA’s Executive Director in 1991, after which she held various positions on the CHHA National Board of Directors starting in 1992, including six years as CHHA National President (ending in June, 2010). She has acted as French Editor, and later as Editor-in-Chief, of Listen/Écoute magazine since its inception in 1991. Carole was thrilled to learn that the magazine was being resumed and that she was invited by the CHHA National Board to reprise her role as Editor. She also supports the International Federation of Hard of Hearing People in her capacity of Editor of the IFHOH Journal.

Carole obtained her law degree at the University of Ottawa and was called to the Bar of Quebec in 1981. The first decade of her career was spent in private practice.  She entered the federal public service in 1991 and did policy development work at Justice Canada for over 12 years in the Criminal Law Policy Section. For two years, she was on assignment in the Privy Council Office, where she served as Chief of Constitutional, Legal and Strategic Affairs. She is currently employed as Legal Counsel, Intergovernmental and External Relations, Justice Canada.  

​In addition, Carole co-founded of the National Council of Federal Employees with Disabilities and served as its Co-Chair for several years. She has received many awards for her work with and for Canadians with disabilities, including the 125th Anniversary Commemorative Medal (1992) and the Golden Jubilee Medal (2002). 

Sheila Serup

Sheila Serup of Calgary is currently Executive Director for the Military Museums Foundation, a non-profit charity which delivers education programs to Alberta youth on Canada’s military heritage. She brings to the CHHA National board experience in management, communications, policy and journalism. She has an educational background in Public Relations and Communications Management, English and is an Accredited Business Communicator.

​Sheila works on advancing understanding and awareness of deaf and hard of hearing issues through the Alberta Premier’s Council on the Status of Persons with Disabilities and through her active involvement with the Canadian Hard of Hearing Association – Calgary branch.
